Nothing but the Clothes on Your Back: A Look at Travel Clothes

There's always the frenzy of deciding what to pack before leaving for a getaway; you don't want to pack so much that you're weighed down by your bags, nor do you want to be unprepared for any event on your travels. All of these problems can be solved by packing clothing specifically engineered for lightweight travel.

It's reasonable to feel a little skeptical of travel clothing's ability to work. Some companies make bold claims about only needing one set of clothes for an entire long-term trip. While these claims are a little exaggerated, it is possible to get through long-term travel with only two or three pairs of clothes. Any clothes especially designed for travel should only require three sets maximum for a long-term trip.

What should you look for when shopping for travel clothes?

When choosing clothes for travel, you want to look for clothing that is lightweight, quick-drying, and odor resistant. These features will keep your pack small and help keep laundry to a minimum.

Good travel clothes are odor resistant, meaning you might be able to stretch a few wears out of them before needing to wash. When you do wash your clothes, you can do it easily in a sink with simple soap (though our guests are free to use the washer and dryer that’s included in their cabin!). Good travel clothes should be quick to dry, so they'll be ready by the morning after washing.

What if It’s Cold When You’re Traveling?

If you are traveling during colder weather, look for clothing with a high warmth-to-weight ratio. You want warm layers that can pack small, yet still provide warmth when you need it. Often, you can get away with just having one warm outer layer and switch your under layers more often.

At the end of the day, versatile travel clothing is the way to go. Try to find easy-wash shirts you can wear to the city and country alike. There are many stylish cuts that are rugged enough to keep you comfortable out hiking, yet flattering and modern enough to work in a city.

Travel clothes are expensive, but well worth the cost if your main goals are to be comfortable and keep your pack small. Avoid cotton blends and opt instead for breathable nylon. Good travel clothes will help keep you lightweight, comfortable, and odor-free.
